Let Me Do It, It’s Faster”: The Habit That Quietly Slows Your Child’s Growth

It’s 8:10 a.m. Your child is sitting on the floor, one shoe on, staring at the other like it’s a puzzle from another planet. The school bus won’t wait. Your phone is buzzing.

You do what every loving parent does. You kneel down, slip the shoe on, and say, “Come on, let me do it, it’s faster.”

Nothing wrong happened in that moment. Your child got to school on time. But if that sentence is on repeat in your home, something small is quietly being taken from your child every day. It’s the chance to figure it out.

The Shortcut That Feels Like Love

Let’s be honest about why we do it. We’re not trying to hold our children back. We’re tired, we’re late, and we hate watching them struggle. Doing it ourselves feels kind.

But a child who never gets to struggle a little never finds out that they can. Over time, “let me do it” can turn into “I can’t do it”, and you’ll hear that second sentence from your child sooner than you’d expect.

At Brainy Stars, this idea sits at the heart of how we teach. We’ve followed a holistic, child-centred approach since 2013, when we started in Bangalore, and the belief behind it is simple: children grow when they are trusted to try. You can read more about our approach on the Brainy Stars homepage, or see it in action at our branches. Parents looking for the best preschool in Koramangala, a Montessori preschool in HBR Layout, or the best preschool in Bismillah Nagar will find the same philosophy in every classroom: let the child do it, with the adult close by.

What Your Child Hears When You Take Over

Children don’t just see the shoe being put on. They absorb the message underneath it. Here’s the translation:

What you say What a child may hear
“Let me do it, it’s faster.” “Speed matters more than my effort.”
“No, not like that, give it here.” “I’m not good at this.”
“I’ll pack your bag for you.” “I’m not trusted with my own things.”
“Careful! You’ll spill it!” “I’m going to fail, so why try?”

None of these are said with bad intentions. But repeated daily, they shape how a child sees themselves.

Where the “Quiet Slowdown” Actually Shows Up

You won’t notice it in a day. You’ll notice it in patterns:

None of this means your child is behind. It usually means they haven’t had enough practice doing things on their own, and practice is something we can give them.

How a Montessori Classroom Does It Differently

Walk into a Montessori classroom and one thing stands out: the room is built for the child, not the adult. Materials are within reach. Tasks are sized for small hands. The teacher’s job isn’t to do things for children but to show them how, then step back.

This is why Brainy Stars classrooms are equipped with complete Montessori materials for hands-on learning, and why our teachers are Montessori-certified. The goal is a child who thinks, “I did that myself.”

Our curriculum also looks beyond academics. Our stated mission is the holistic development of every child, intellectual, emotional, physical and spiritual, through child-centred, experiential learning. Independence is where all four meet.

Try This at Home: Swap the Sentence

You don’t need a Montessori classroom to start. You need a few new sentences.

Instead of: “Let me do it.”
Try: “Want to try first? I’m right here.”

Instead of: “That’s not how you do it.”
Try: “Interesting! What happens if you turn it around?”

Instead of: “Hurry up, we’re late.”
Try: “Let’s start 10 minutes earlier tomorrow so you can do it yourself.”

That last one matters most. Independence needs time. If mornings feel impossible, don’t take over; start earlier.

Small Jobs That Build Big Confidence

Give your child real jobs, not pretend ones:

  1. Carrying their own school bag to the door
  2. Putting their shoes and water bottle in the same place every day
  3. Wiping a spill with a small cloth
  4. Choosing between two outfits the night before
  5. Putting their plate in the sink after meals

Expect it to be slow and a little messy. That is exactly how learning looks.

When Helping Is Still the Right Thing

This isn’t about stepping back from your child entirely. Help when they’re frustrated beyond what they can handle, when safety is involved, or when they ask. The aim is to help less, not care less. Try offering the smallest hint first, then see if they can take it from there.

A Little Mess Today, A Confident Child Tomorrow

The next time you’re kneeling beside a child with one shoe on, pause for three seconds. Let them try. Let it take longer. That small pause is where confidence grows.
